Holdin’ Hands, Helpin’ Hearts Program

The Holdin’ Hands, Helpin’ Hearts Program provides keepsake hand-prints for families of cancer patients free of charge throughout the County of Los Angeles.  It helps the loved ones of cancer patients to memorialize the people they love.  Our talented artists complete the design of the art piece to the specifications of the family. All of our hand-prints are crafted to last a lifetime. It is our desire to inspire families to memorialize the people they love who are being treated for cancer.

Our project manager is Lisa BarriosShe has worked closely with cancer patients and their families for over 17 years at the City of Hope in Duarte, Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles and local senior homes to provide these complimentary keepsake hand-prints. This compassionate and award-winning outreach has been featured by KNBC 4 and ABC 7 and honored by the City of Monrovia and the Monrovia Chamber of Commerce.

We provide a “hand” that will support cancer patients and their families with a legacy gift of remembrance.

The Monrovia Association of Fine Arts is committed to this charity and has served as its foundation for many years.

The Program provides a ceramic hand-print art piece that is:

  • Designed to the patient’s and family’s specifications, from hand imprint in clay to decor to the final firing in the kiln
  • Created in a fun, therapeutic and artistic art studio or if necessary, we can go to the hospital to facilitate the print
  • Made to last a lifetime
  • Handcrafted only using products made in the United States.
  • Located in Old Town Monrovia or our artist can go to the hospital  at the patient’s convenience.

We had no idea at that time it would be the last time Lance and his parents would be all together for a joyful photo as Lance passed away a short time later. The news crushed us and yet we realized the gift he had given us… the realization of how significant and time sensitive these ceramic pieces can be.

Holdin’ Hands, Helpin’ Hearts is honored to share this story about a brilliant child, Lance Raymond Fish July 20, 2005 - April 30, 2007

Lance was a young patient being treated at the City of Hope for cancer when we first met him. He and his mother Julie spent precious time in our art studio, Paint ‘n’ Play in Old Town Monrovia on his "good days," building memories and quality "Mommy and Me" moments. On one of his visits we watched his love for the arts in amazement as he painted a very colorful skateboard made of pottery. We decided that Lance should have his own little hand-print in clay to celebrate his life. We took the impression along with fun photos and after careful processing, we delivered the piece to Lance and his family. On delivery day we celebrated and took more photos (see below). We had no idea at that time it would be the last time Lance and his parents would be all together for a joyful photo as Lance passed away a short time later. The news crushed us and yet we realized the gift he had given us… the realization of how significant and time-sensitive these ceramic pieces can be. Through the art of pottery, the actual anatomy of a loved one can be cherished for years to come. We knew then that we must continue offering this gift of commemoration for cancer patients and especially for the families of the patients as a legacy of their loved ones. Lance has made a permanent and profound IMPRESSION on us. In his name and the many other cancer patients we have provided hand-prints for, we will remain devoted to this program.
