Art Took Flight at 54th Annual Celebrate the Arts Show & ChalkFest

Clear bright skies and soaring spirits set the tone for MAFA's annual 2-day celebration of art in Monrovia Library Park on Oct. 7 and 8. With its "Art Takes Flight" theme chosen by Featured Artist Mike Herdering, the event hosted nearly 30 fine artists and chalk artists along with live musical entertainment, a kids art activity of decorating a used car, a used book sale put on by Friends of Monrovia Library, a beer garden and food trucks. Also participating were several ceramics students from Monrovia High School, led by their teacher, Mr. Sal Perez, as well as several local community non-profit groups

City Manager Oliver Chi welcomed everyone to the show Saturday morning at the Awards Ceremony, emceed by Councilmember Becky Shevlin. Mayor Pro Tem Gloria Crudgington presented MAFA's Renaissance Award on Darrell Brooke for his arts advocacy and support in the community, and the Heart in the Arts Award to Frank Zgonc, MAFA board member and past president for his dedicated volunteer work for MAFA over the past 10+ years.

MAFA President Carol Curtis acknowledged Mike Herdering as featured artist, and Celebrate the Arts Event Chair Christine Geltz acknowledged the outstanding support of this year's event sponsors: Darrell Brooke (title sponsor), Fellowship Monrovia, SunRun, Brian Huffman Photography, Chris Shevlin / Chicago Title, Paint 'n' Play Art Studio and Volunteer Center of San Gabriel Valley.

On Sunday, a team of judges led by ChalkFest chair Bill Hyatt chose the prize-winning entries of the chalk competition: First prize of $500 sponsored by SunRun went to Leo Aguirre for his beautiful portrait of Princess Diana.  Second prize of $250 sponsored by Chris Shevlin / Chicago title was awarded to Patricia Llovera for her colorful geometric design. And Shelsea Flores won third prize sponsored by MAFA for her beautiful portrait of a dragon girl.

Looking ahead to next year, our 2018 featured Artist Anko Chang as chosen the theme ""Art Changes the World" for the 55th Annual Celebrate the Arts event, scheduled for Oct. 6 and 7, 2018. Along with his MAFA Heart in the Arts Award, longtime MAFA board member Frank Zgonc accepts certificates of recognition from the City of Monrovia from Councilmember Becky Shevlin as Mayor Pro Tem Gloria Crudgington looks on.
