The City of Monrovia’s Art in Public Places program supports the creation of public art through a variety of programs and projects. The Art on a Box utility box enhancement program extends the reach of public art into the community by sponsoring artists to turn City-owned utility cabinets into canvases for art.
Based on available funding as well as available utility boxes, the City funds four to five boxes each year and accepts applications for them between January 1 and March 31.This year the City has chosen five artists to paint utility boxes, including these MAFA members and their design themes:
Myrtle Ave and Duarte Rd: Christine Geltz, Santa Fe Chief
Myrtle Ave and Pomona Ave: Carlos Chavez, Wine and Grapes
Foothill Blvd and Canyon Blvd: Eric Watkins, Native Americans
MAFA member Judy Watkins will also complete her Roaring 20’s design awarded last year on the box at Foothill Blvd and Fifth Ave.
